Dear Professor Klymenko, dear Rector,

May we use this opportunity to express our delight that your university is among the ranks of the signatory universities of the Magna Charta Universitatum. The Magna Charta Universitatum outlines the fundamental principles and values of The University, which for centuries have formed the basis for scientific and social advancement of our societies. By signing the Magna Charta Universitatum your university committed itself to adhere to these principles and values.

The mission of the Magna Charta Observatory is to promote, defend and enhance the fundamental principles and values, particularly institutional autonomy and academic freedom by bringing together the signatory universities and thereby forming a community of shared purpose. The role of the Magna Charta Observatory is to act as

  • as an advisor for universities, ministries and other stakeholders in higher education;
  • as a think-tank on related to the Magna Charta Universitatum;
  • as a convenor by organising various conferences, workshops, summer schools, etc.;
  • as a mediator in cases of conflict or dispute.

Additionally, we are making several publications every year on a wide range of topics that are of interest to the signatory universities and the wider world of higher education. Certainly, you have already had the possibility to take advantage of our offerings.

The main beneficiaries of the work of the Magna Charta Observatory are the signatory universities. We purposefully offer all our services, provide all our publications and organise all our conference free of charge for the universities in order to facilitate the inclusion of every single signatory university into our work, regardless of their financial capacities. Our work is currently financed entirely by the Italian authorities to which we are very grateful. However, we are unfortunately facing some painful cuts in our budget – at a time of an increasing workload for the Magna Charta Observatory.

For the aforementioned reasons we have decided to maintain our policy of keeping all our offerings free of charge and we also do not charge any membership fee from signatory universities. Therefore, we would like to kindly ask you to consider whether it would be feasible for your university to make a voluntary contribution to the Magna Charta Observatory of between 500 and 1000 EUR, preferably on an annual basis. Any contribution from your side would strongly support our activities.

Should you be in a position to help and support the Magna Charta Observatory, we would like to ask you to get in touch with us by Email so that we can inform you about the practicalities of transferring money to us. Needless to say, in case your university would not be in a position to make a voluntary contribution, this will not have any impact on our services and support for you.

We would also like to ask you to consider making it more visible that your university is amongst the signatory universities of the Magna Charta Universitatum. This could for example be highlighted in any of your publications. We are attaching an image that we would like to kindly ask you to integrate in your homepage with a link to our website www.magna-charta.org <http://www.magna-charta.org/>. We would highly appreciate if you could arrange for this to appear on the starting page of your university's website.

We would also like to mention that you of course have the possibility to contact us any time if you have any questions. Please also feel free to approach us if you think we should intensify our cooperation with your university, if you would like a representative of the Magna Charta Observatory to participate at a major event at your university or if you would like to host a meeting of the Magna Charta Observatory Council or if you would to discuss the organisation of a specific event in cooperation with us.

We should be immensely grateful for your support and look forward to welcoming you again in the city of Bologna for one of our annual conferences or at any other event we are organising.

Yours sincerely,

Michael Daxner                      Bastian Baumann
